Previous Policy Reference
When an emergency or some other circumstance beyond the control of the applicant prevents them from filing a CHIP application, allow a grace enrollment period beginning no earlier than four days prior to the date an applicant submits a completed and signed application. To receive the coverage, the applicant must inform you that medical services were received during those four days and request the coverage before the application is approved. If they fail to request it until after their application is approved, they are not eligible for the grace period coverage.
Example #1: Jeremy Irons was admitted to the emergency room at 10:30 p.m. on Friday, June 7 with a broken leg. His mom needed to be home to take care of him so she was not able to apply for CHIP until Tuesday, June 11th. When she applied, she informed you of the emergency and requested CHIP coverage back to the date of the emergency. Because the date of the emergency was within four days of the date of application, his coverage can be approved as of June 7th.
Example #2: Ron McDonald went to the doctor for a well child checkup on Tuesday, June 11th. His parents applied for CHIP on Friday, June 14th and requested CHIP coverage back to June 11th. Because there was not an emergency that prevented his parent’s from applying earlier, they are not eligible for the four day grace period coverage. CHIP benefits begin on June 14th.
