203-7  Temporary Absence from the State

Temporary absences from the State for schooling, temporary employment, missionary service, medical care, or visits do not affect residency if the individual intends to return to Utah when the reason for the absence is accomplished.  To decided if the absence is temporary, you may need to find out if:

  1. the absence is for a specific period of time,

  2. the person is maintaining his home in Utah, or

  3. other factors exist that indicate the person intends to return to Utah when the reason for the absence ends.

(For someone who has recently moved to Utah, see section 203-6.)

RESIDENCY NOTE:  If you have questions as to whether or not someone meets Utah residency requirements, or if a person denied as a Utah resident is also denied by another state and re-applies, call the CHIP Program Specialist listed in Table V.
