211-3 Who Does Not Have to Provide a Social Security Number

Previous Policy

The following are exceptions to the requirement to provide a Social Security Number:

Children placed for adoption who do not have a SSN are not required to provide a SSN until after the adoption is finalized.

Household members who do not want CHIP or who are not eligible for CHIP due to age or citizenship/non-citizen status requirements do not have to provide a SSN.

Household members who refuse to obtain a SSN due to well-established religious objections.

Certain children who qualify as lawfully present (202-2.1).
